Turn That Light Off! If you let a 100W incadescant light bulb burn 24/7 for one year, the amount of coal that would have to be burned to generate the energy to power that bulb is almost 1/2 ton resulting in about 3/2 ton of CO2 released into the atmosphere. You can find the calculation here. The energy content of coal (joules per mass or volume) and other fuels can be found here. |

Lots of Power There! When you are filling up at a gas pump, assuming your tank holds 20 gallons and it takes you 3 minutes to fill your tank, while you are pumping gas you are adding stored energy to your car a rate of 14 megawatts! This is based on an energy density of gasoline of 34 millions joules per liter (again see here). |

Going Nuclear! Ask the question - which country produces the most electricity via nuclear power and the answer you are most likely to get is France. But actually the US produces twice as much as France (reference). Nuclear power is used to provide 80% of France's electricity. In the US, nuclear accounts for 10% of the capacity for electricity generation but 20% of the electricity actually generated. |
